Many of the scripture and portrait papers are entirely produced in traditional hand made methods by Dege Sutra-Printing House. However, the raw material for papermaking is very unique and is a kind of Tibetan medicinal material called "Ejiaorujiao" – the slightly toxic roots of the stellera chamaejasme. This kind of papermaking technique requires that the material be pounded until it is disintegrated. The unique Dege paper is yellow in color, thicker, better at ink absorption, lighter, optimized for long storage, tough, non-friable, and also it can repel the biting of bugs and rats.
