The Tibetan area is known as the “Ocean of Singing and Dancing”, while the Garze is located in Kham, and various Tibetan cultures have been introduced into Kham after a certain period of development in Tibet. Throughout the long history, and through the processing of several generations of folk artists, the local characteristics have been formed. The famous Garze tap dance is a wild and excellent dance performance art in the Tibetan areas.

The Garze tap dance is a kind of folk dance and is considered to be one of the typical dance performances in Kham. In November 2014, the “Garze tap dance” was approved by the State Council to be included in the list of extension projects and representative project of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Garze tap dance is unique because it maintians the tradition of folk dance. The jumping steps make the dance lively and cheerful with the traditional Tibetan folk music. It is a free dance performance. In addition, compared with other dances where the beat rhythms with the feet, Garze tap dance is more and shows complex techniques and foot rhythms, which is powerful and concise. The development of Garze tap dance has developed a lot in modern times. It has been widely used in entertainment, big performances, folk songs and dances and other occasions, and it has become a representative “traditional folk dance” in Garze.

The Garze tap dance has become one of the unique dance style in northern Kham. The Garze tap dance team has performed in Beijing, Chengdu, Yunnan, Diqing, and other places. This unique and impressive dance style fully demonstrates the enthusiasm and struggle of the Garze people. The Garze tap dance is one of the indispensable lifestyle of the Garze people. Everyone voluntarily inherits it, and perform it on the modern stage to make people remember deep inside their hearts, because the ethnic art is the art of the world.
